Hey guys! My last post was about the different tools used for pattern making. This post is going to talk about how we can use the pattern created on paper to make garments.

A pattern is basically a template for different parts of the garment. There are separate patterns cut for parts like sleeves, pants, etc. It is a blueprint for garments before they are cut and assembled. Patterns are made on paper and then traced on to the fabric to be cut.

This is a dartless bodice pattern. The left one is the pattern for back and right one is for front. The vertical lines, called grain lines, drawn are a guide to cut the fabric.

We trace this pattern on a muslin fabric. To get the front, we fold the muslin and then cut on the edge side to get two pieces and for the back we fold the muslin and cut towards the folded side to get one symmetrical piece.

The left picture shows two pieces for the front and the right one shows the back piece.

Now its time to stitch them together. I was super excited to finally start with it. I had no idea how the sewing machine even worked. The first time we went to the lab and saw how it works, I became very nervous because it looked really difficult.

But again, once I learned how to use it, it didn't seem that difficult. I did get confused a lot of times and wasted a LOT of thread and fabric but you have to be patient and keep practicing!

Here are somethings that we need for the machine-

  1. Sewing thread

  2. Bobbin

  3. Bobbin case

  4. Scissors

  5. Thread cutter

Different machines use different types of bobbins.

First we start by filling the bobbin with thread and attaching it to the machine.

Then we attach the thread to the machine and start stitching.

Here I am stitching the shoulders of the garment together. After that we move on attaching the other parts.

This is how the final garment looks after stitching and ironing-

To seal the ends of the garment we overlock them. There is a different machine for that too.

Overlocking is the zig-zag pattern that we see at the ends of our clothes. They secure the ends so that the threads don't come off.

This entire process was so exciting for me and I can't wait to do more of this!

Thank you for reading this post! You can always subscribe for more:)
